II Seminário sobre Diplomacia e Inovação Científica e Tecnológica

On December 8, the Minister of Foreign Affairs (MRE), Aloysio Nunes Ferreira (read his speech), and the minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication (MCTIC), Gilberto Kassab opened the “II Seminário sobre Diplomacia e Inovação Científica e Tecnológica: Ação Internacional no Brasil”, at Itamaraty, Brasília. The main speaker was the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq)’s president-in-office, Marcelo Marcos Morales.

With the organization of MCTIC and MRE and the support of the Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG), the seminar aimed to share experiences with countries that implemented public policies forstering science, technology and innovation. MCTIC and MRE signed an interministerial ordinance during the event, creating the Commission of Science, Technology and Innovation Coordination to enhance Brazil’s international acting in those areas.

In the first panel, “International Action in Brazil: Argentina and Sweden”, the lecturers were the national director of Institutional Cooperation and Integration of Argentina’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Jorge Mariano Jordán, and Sweden’s ambassador in Brazil, Per-Arne Hjelmborn. The debate was moderated by MCTIC’s director of Science Policies and Programs, Savio Raeder.

FUNAG’s president, Ambassador Sérgio Moreira Lima, moderated the second panel, “International Action in Brazil: China and European Union”, in which participated China’s ambassador in Brazil, Li Jinzhang, and the European Union’s Deputy Director-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG-Connect), Khalil Rouhana.

In the third panel, “International Action in Brazil: the multilateral dimension”, the Science coordinator of UNESCO’s Representation in Brazil, Fábio Eon, and Project “ENRICH-Brazil”’s coordinator, Markus Will, did the presentations. The director of MRE’s Department of Scientific and Technologic Themes, Ambassador Benedicto Fonseca Filho, moderated the discussions.

In the fourth and last panel, “International Action in Brazil: Denmark’s Innovation Centers and the startups’ universe”, the lecturers were Stina Nordsborg, Innovation Attaché of the Innovation Centre Denmark, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, in São Paulo; Paulo de Castro Reis, director of Institutional Relations Brazil-Canadá; Gustavo Cunha Debs, ZUP Innovation’s director of operations; and Vitor Magnani, iFood’s Public Policies vice-president and President of the Brazilian Association Online to Offline (ABO2O). The deputy chief of staff of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister Manuel Montenegro, mediated the debate.
